Zilker Botanical Garden Center Coordinator
Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major coursework in Horticulture or other related field, plus three (3) years of experience managing horticultural programs in the field and programs for the public.Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.
Licenses or Certifications:
Class “C” motor vehicle operator’s license.
Texas Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB) Applicator License

The Zilker Botanical Garden is ideally located in the center of Texas’ capital city. The gardens are on parkland that is magnificently endowed by nature with handsome trees, natural grottoes and aquatic features that have been integrated into a design of spectacular beauty and tranquility.
The purpose of this position is to maintain and enhance the grounds and facilities of the Zilker Botanical Garden; provide day-to-day coordination of projects to ensure a safe, aesthetic and educational experience for visitors; facilitate projects and programs with partner organizations; and implement objectives of Parks & Recreation Department (PARD) strategic plan.
Other relevant duties include:
• Supervision of the Horticulture staff, including coordinating work schedules; and monitoring staff licensing and certifications to ensure all licensing are current and CEUs obtained.
• Coordinate and supervise landscape projects, including seasonal display/color beds, woody landscape areas, and hardscape projects including walks, retaining walls, irrigation systems, fountains, and other landscape features.
• Design, plan, and coordinate purchase and installation of landscape plants for seasonal and permanent gardens.
• Serve as a core team member for planning, installation and coordination of Garden shows and exhibits implemented in conjunction with partner organizations.
• Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
• Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.
• Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions.
Driver’s License and other Certifications:
• If selected as a top candidate, a Texas Class C Driver’s License or have the ability to acquire one by the date of hire will be required.
• Must have Texas Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB) Applicator License by date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications and Certifications in the following:
• Three (3) or more years’ experience supervising, recruiting, training employees and/or volunteers/volunteer groups in public gardens and/or horticultural collections/programs.
• Knowledge of Texas native and adapted landscape plants, including seasonal annuals and perennials as well as woody plant materials.
• Three (3) or more years’ experience with horticulture landscape design and installation; garden-related construction; principles of design; xeriscape and best practices for Central Texas gardening.
• Experience working with the public and supporting public garden/environmental programs and services with diverse populations and communities, including public speaking and interacting with individuals of diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
• Experience working in a State, County or Municipality setting.
• Texas Certified Nurseryman Certification.
• Bilingual in English/Spanish, or English/other language.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Oversees the maintenance of programs for propagating plants, cultivating and maintaining flowerbeds, irrigating grounds and landscape, and conserving natural areas.
2. Assists in developing, recommend, implement and monitor programs and projects at garden facilities and plan and develop facility improvements.
3. Supervises and coordinates landscape projects, including walks, retaining walls, irrigation systems, fountains, and other landscape features.
4. Provides advice to other organizations within the City on horticultural practices and procedures.
5. Assists in developing, approve and implement program service guidelines.
6. Provides support to shows, exhibits, workshops and other education programs.
7. Works with various groups and organizations to help inform and help resolve issues on horticultural practices, including organizing volunteer and member participation.
8. Administers contracts to ensure adherence to performance specifications.
9. Assists in developing and implement long and short range goals

May fill in for supervisor in his or her absence.
